Water heater leaking on the floor?

- Close the cold water valve on top of the heater.
- Turn off power at the breaker (electric) or set the gas control to off or pilot.
- Mop or wet-vac water away from walls and stored boxes.
- Check nearby drywall and flooring for wicking.
Avoid
- Don't touch the heater's electrical parts while standing in water.
- Don't open the drain valve if the water is hot.
What a water damage company usually does
A water damage company removes the water and dries the floor, subfloor and walls; you'll also want a plumber for the heater itself.
