Frozen water pipe against a building wall in snow
Urgent

Frozen pipe burst?

When a frozen pipe thaws, the split lets water pour out, often inside a wall or ceiling where you can't see it. Shut off the main valve now and look for wet spots on ceilings and walls near outside walls, garages and crawl spaces.

Step 2 of 3

What kind of water?

Step 3 of 3

When did it start?

Do this now

  • Shut off the main water valve.
  • Open faucets to drain the lines.
  • Look for bulging ceilings, wet drywall and water under cabinets on outside walls.
  • Keep heat on in the house so other pipes don't freeze.

Avoid

  • Don't use an open flame to thaw pipes.
  • Don't turn the water back on until the break is repaired.

What a water damage company usually does

Pros find hidden moisture with meters and thermal cameras, open only what's needed, and dry the wall cavities and framing.

Water still coming in, or soaked into floors and walls? That's the time to call. Drying started early means less gets torn out.
